A word from Macayla, the 'Where the Wild Things Are Max and Carol' costume creator:
My boyfriend (Carol) and I (Max) brought the Wild things to life!
Carols Head: the base I started with a large balloon I purchased at Michaels. I started paper mache around the balloon, 4 coats of thick paper mache. The head took the longest from all the paper mache drying. After that was done, I traced where I was placing the eyes, noes, etc. I then added the faux fur with a glue gun (if you don't have patience this isn't a project for you lol). To make the face look like it had life like features, I stuffed plastic bags under the fur before gluing it down and shaped how I wanted it to look, for example: eye brows, lip, etc. The teeth are made of styrophome and the eyes I bought from Michaels. The horns are also paper mached over tin foil then painted. The head is stuffed with foam and pillow fluff to keep head on and for comfort, although the head was a little heavier than expected so my boyfriend was a trooper.
Carols body: I used an old sweatshirt my bf didn't want and also pants and just started gluing away with faux fur. I cut the fit in strips and went from there. For the pants, it's on solid color and I painted patches on them. In the movie he has a feather like bottom half but feathers are too expensive to the paint worked out well. Feet are slip on "wolf feet" that I purchased from a Halloween store, I then glued nails on. Hands are gloves with fur and nails glued on.
Max: Max's costume was a lot easier. I purchased the onsie on Amazon and went from there. I sewed the buttons on. The ears are the same material I purchased and stuffed with fluff, I cut the pieces so they matched and I glued them together, then I carefully glued the ears onto the hood. The tail is faux fur glued together and sewed on. The whiskers are black pipe cleaners. Max's boat: the boat is made of cardboard, flag is made of styrophome.
Overall these costumes cost little under 100 bucks and they were a huge success, we spent the day in Salem and everyone loved us, especially carol!
