A word from Kriss, the 'Octopus Swimming in the Ocean' costume creator:
It was easy to decide to make my 14 month old an octopus for halloween, its her nickname from her dad and I. But I knew I'd be wearing her in a baby carrier so I could still help our 3 year old trick or treat, but I didn't want a costume to be covered up by the carrier.
Using fleece I made the body of the octopus to cover my Beco butterfly carrier. 6 of the legs were stuffed and stitched to the bottom of the cover, these were all cut out freehand by me. The sparkly fabric were the "suckers". I used iron on fabric and felt to create the eyes.
I also made "babyleg" style octopus legs for the 7th and 8th leg, the ends were stuffed so that they would also have a fluffed out appearance.
I also wanted my daughter to stay warm so using more fleece I made her a matching hoodie and hat.
I wanted myself to represent the ocean so I made a circle skirt out of 2 layers of fabric, with a fleece yoga style waist band. The under-layer of the skirt was a blue/white poly that looked oceany, and the upper layer was sparkly organza netting. I cut them both with an asymmetric hem to add to the flowy nature of water.
Overall I was very pleased with how everything turned out, and my daughter was very warm! She was as comfortable as she could have been without having to be wearing a bulky costume!
