The Giggly-Wiggly Octopus Costume

The Giggly-Wiggly Octopus

Costume type:  Costumes for Babies
Categories:Halloween Costumes, Animal Costumes

This homemade costume for babies entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Emily, the 'The Giggly-Wiggly Octopus' costume creator:

My baby daughter, Natalie Kate, is wearing the home made octopus costume. I was trying to save money this Halloween, while still being creative and was browsing images of baby costumes online. I saw a similar costume made out of different colored tube-socks, and I thought I could do the same thing using baby tights. I stuffed the legs of the tights with stuffing and attached to a waistband. She is wearing one of the pair of tights to make 8 legs. I added octopus eyes to a pink hat she already had to complete the thrifty costume. It was a big hit! She loved wiggling her many legs all night!

Thanks, Rebecca. The tights were from Target.

Oh the eyes! I made those from the striped, pink material at the top of the tights. Thanks for your comments!

How did you attach the stuffed tights to the waistband?

#8 comment by Emily September 12, 2013

I sewed the stuffed legs to the waistband.

What did you use for a waste band? This is so cute. I want to do this for my 9 month old's first Halloween!! I'm hoping my creativity will work!! :)

Thanks for your comments! Emily, I stuffed the legs of several pairs of tights and sewed them to the top of one of the pairs of tights (I guess I called it a waistband in the description). I wanted to be able to take the legs off of her while we were in the car, etc. but I wanted her to still be wearing her tights, so I did not want to attach all the legs to her pair.

Thanks for the description! Could you go into a little detail about the " waist band" portion? Did you cut one pair of tights so that you could slide the circular portion over her waist? If so, did you have to sew up the waist band part to prevent fraying? Thanks!

Such a cute idea. How old was your daughter when she wore this? I'm thinking about trying to make a similar costume my daughter. She will be a little over 9 months at Halloween. Thanks for posting this!

Very cute costume. So, is she wearing a onesie over that, if so how are all the legs sticking out from the two leg holes so evenly?

This is great, i'm thinking of doing the same thing for my daughter and I wanted to know a little more about how you attached the legs as well. Did you just buy a piece of elastic and sew the extra legs into that?

How did you make eyes I saw you said it's tights but what's in middle please and thanks

I love it!! So cute. I'm going to attempt this too for my 14 month old. You could use any waist band really right? Just something stretchy so you can see the other 6 legs on. Thanks for the inspiration!

After just finding out that the costumes I ordered for my daughter will not be here on time I took to Google to find some ideas for some homemade costumes. Thank you for posting this picture and directions on how to make it!! It is absolutely adorable! You saved Halloween for us! :)
