Who said Halloween is just for the kids? With themed costumes, parents and other adult family members can join in on the ghoulishly-good times. If zombies have picked your brains and you're a candy corn or two short of a good idea, draw some inspiration from this sweet selection of family-friendly costumes. Don't simply be a bystander this Halloween while the kids have all the fun- make it a trick-or-treat to remember with some fang-tastic family fun!
Doughnuts and the Makers
Sent in by Kelly to our 2014 costume contest.
This delectable theme sure gives us a sugar high! Everyone loves doughnuts, and this costume combination really satisfies a sweet tooth. The kids look absolutely a-doughnut-able in sugary-sweet pink outfits and inflatable rubber rings made to look like doughnuts. Mom and dad join in the confectionery fun as a pair of doughnut makers, sporting baker's aprons and wooden spoons. As if sprinkles weren't enough to top off this theme, doughnut baker hats finish off the look. Now that's one idea we think is just scrumptious!
Treasure Troll Trio
Sent in by Georgia to our 2014 costume contest.
Here's a trio of trolls we wouldn't mind meeting when we're out and about. This family takes us back to a time when treasure troll dolls were very popular. This costume theme is sure to revive some nostalgia on the streets Halloween night. With vibrant, colorful wigs against a plain outfit, this family really stands out. Best of all, this costume is nearly effortless- a few colored wigs and solid-colored clothing are all that's needed to create this memorable look. Add a finishing touch with your very own unique-shaped 'gem' and onlookers will really be envious of your troll-tastic imagination.
Beehive and Beekeeper
Sent in by Vanessa to our 2014 costume contest.
The streets will be buzzing with excitement over these bee-utiful outfits. The bumble bee costume is a real classic, and most of us can remember that year (or five) we went buzzing around town on Halloween as a bee collecting candy. This creative hive-mind has come up with a clever way for mom and dad to join in the fun. As a hive and beekeeper, these two keep their little bees in check and make sure plenty of candy makes it back to the honeycomb. Make a beeline for the nearest craft store and create your own version with fun fabrics and little bee decorations. Bzzt!
The Breakfast Club
Sent in by April to our 2014 costume contest.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day they say, and this family is making breakfast an all-evening affair. Not only do we love this costume because it's cute, but because it's clever and has endless possibilities. Maybe you're more of a bacon person? Dress up like a giant slice of bacon. How about toast and jam? Maybe a box of your favorite cereal? Gather the family around the table and create your very own breakfast club. What an egg-cellent idea!
Family Trophy Shelf
Sent in by Christy to our 2014 costume contest.
Some are content with their trophy shelf at home, but others...well, they need to be a bit more flashy! This family shows off their sporty side by turning themselves into a variety of sports trophies. Complete with their very own pedestals, you might mistake this family for giant trophies at first glance. Imitate the look with some metallic paint and props. Finally, a great use for that overworn sporting equipment cluttering the garage. This one is a guaranteed home run with players of all ages!
Halloween may only last for one night, but family memories are to be cherished forever. Take a page from these family photo albums and design your very own theme that shows off what a fun and unique family you are. You'll have a howling good time prowling the Halloween streets with your own pack of werewolves (or hive of bees, or trio of trolls, or bunch of breakfast foods....oh, you get the idea!).
