A word from Lianne, the 'Head in a Bag' costume creator:
I wanted to make a unique illusion costume this year, and after looking at a few variations on costume-works.com I was inspired to make this one.
The only thing I had to buy was a $3 mask for the ghoul, and the rest were things I had around the house. Even if you had to buy things from a thrift store it still probably cost less than $20!
These are the materials I used:
A ghoul mask
A Hanger
Cardboard
String
Duct Tape
Polyester Stuffing
An old T-shirt
An old hooded sweatshirt
An old duffel bag
First I made the torso by attaching the cardboard to the coat hanger with string and duct tape to make the basic shape. I then put the mask over the neck and filled it with stuffing. The T-shirt went over the torso and I lined the cardboard parts with stuffing to give it a more natural shape, and filled the sleeves. I then sewed the sleeves and bottom of the T-shirt together.
Then I made the outer part of the costume by cutting out the bottom of the duffel bag, and cutting a similar sized hole in the back of the sweatshirt, then sewed them together.
To put it on I put my legs through the hole in the sweatshirt and bag, and put my arms through the sleeves. I then tucked the torso in to the sweatshirt, and zipped it up. Then the strap from the bag goes around the torso to keep it in place. I also wore baggy jeans and gloves to complete the illusion.
This costume was a lot of fun to wear! Not only is it inexpensive, it was also very comfortable, easy to make, and it was great seeing people's reactions. (It really freaks some people out!) I hope I see other people making their own versions of it next year so I can enjoy seeing it from the other side!
