Yoda Carrying Princess Leia
Sent in by Kelly to our 2016 costume contest.
This illusion costume is one that you probably only would have expected in the swamps of Dagobah. This small Yoda that appears as if it could only be portrayed by a child but it isn’t - Princess Leia and Yoda are portrayed by the same person. Who thought that Yoda would take the form of some very unusual pants?
Invisible Man
Sent in by Erin to our 2015 costume contest.
Remember the old movie - The Invisible Man? The reincarnations of it in both movie and television form? This costume is one of the best invisible man disguises that we have ever seen. The hat and glasses appear to float in the sky. In fact, it is hard to tell there is even a person in the costume at all. This idea isn’t just good for Halloween, it will work for any time of the year. Just make sure not to scare any of your friends too bad.
Firefighter saving Baby
Sent in by Adrian to our 2015 costume contest.
Who doesn’t like a firefighter rescuing a baby from a fire? Something isn’t right with this firefighter’s face though and just look at that baby. Quite creative and inspirational. With all that heavy black fabric though, one might wonder if you would overheat in that costume. Probably best left for Halloween and the colder season but still one of the best optical illusions we have seen.
Cut in Half
Sent in by Nina to our 2014 costume contest.
Sometimes an optical illusion can be just as creepy when it is less of a disguise. This girl is one of those examples. What happened to her torso? The upper half of her body looks to have been completely displaced and I believe it. A masterful job by a clever young costume maker. We wonder how those pants manage to stay up though.
Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf
Sent in by Jessica to our 2014 costume contest.
Little red riding hood is a popular costume for any time of the year but what happens when you don’t have someone to play the role of the wolf? You play both parts. Despite appearing to be shoved in the box, this little red riding hood is both herself and the wolf. When the wolf legs move she is secretly pushing it along. Not really how we imagined the wolf from little red riding hood but it still is more realistic than most costumes we see.
The gallery on this page shows some of the most creative optical illusion costumes we have seen over the years. What people can create with some thought and a little bit of hard work is impressive. Some of these were even created by kids, all the more impressive for that fact alone. From inspirational to creative to scary, there are a lot of different things that can be made with a little trick of the eyes. In fact, we have lots of submissions containing crafty optical illusions in our contest every year. Take from them what you will but we hope you are inspired and encouraged to create your very own unique illusion Halloween costume.
