A word from Victoria, the 'Portland Garbage Day' costume creator:
Every year my sisters and my cousin create a costume set. This year we wanted 3 adult size costumes and 1 child size costume. During a long car ride back to Portland, Oregon we were brainstorming and came up with the idea of having a garbage, recycling (paper), compost, and glass bin. It was perfect because in Portland the glass container is small and the 3 other bins are larger. To create the costumes we used old boxes and covered in with the appropriate colored poster boards. We put wheels on the back sides made out of black paper plates. Each "can" was adorned with either actual recycle or garbage around my house, or printed cutout of rotten food or glass containers. The words on the front were cut out from printed paper also. Overall the only thing we paid for on the costume was the poster board which was about 3 dollars per person. The costumes were easy to make, and a great success when we all stood as a set. Portland is a very environmentally friendly city so we were a huge hit on the streets. We even found our actual twins (real cans) outside because Halloween happened to by the night before garbage day.
