A word from Lori, the 'Rainbow and Pot of Gold' costume creator:
This costume idea came from my six year old daughter Kinley who wanted to do something a little different this year. She wanted to be a rainbow and after searching the internet for ideas I realized there were not many rainbow costumes out there. So we decided to make this one out of card board, material, cotton batting, and lots of hot glue. First we drew out the design on a large sheet of white paper and used it as a template when cutting out the cardboard. We covered the cardboard with batting and then used the hot glue to attach the material. After all the pieces were assembled we glued them onto another piece of cardboard to give it support. We them used more cotton batting to make the clouds and added some ribbon straps to tie around her back to make it comfortable to wear. After that was done we started on her little sisters costume. We were thinking about things that would go with the rainbow. Care bears, sun, leprechauns, then we thought what about a leprechaun with a pot of gold. So we started on that. First thing we did was find a large plastic cauldron cut the bottom out of it and bought a lot of plastic pirate coins. We then cut out a lot of 1.5in circles out of cardboard and painted them all gold to mach the coins. We glued the cardboard down first as fillers and then put all the real coins on top. We then added a few green straps for her to wear it and then cut out more cardboard and painted it gold to make buckles for her bow and boots. She wore an old dress that had shamrocks on it with a pair of green tights and was the perfect side kick for our rainbow!
