A word from Kelly, the 'Ursula' costume creator:
I decided to go as Ursula from the Little Mermaid, one of my favourite childhood movies. I found a black bridesmaid dress at a thrift shop that was the starting point of the costume. I made the tentacles out of additional black fabric and glittery purple fabric. I cut out all the sucker cups for the tentacles out of a darker purple and light purple felt in various sizes and sewed them to the eight tentacles. The eels and tentacles were both stuffed with cotton and chicken wire to help give them shape. The eels had fishing line attached to them so I could hold them up by my wrists for a floating appearance. I dyed the shirt (to limit the amount of makeup) and sewed the necklace to the collar to hide the shirt seam. The seashell was made from children's foam clay and painted. The earrings were made from shells that I painted and made into earrings. For photos I went on my knees to be able to spread out the tentacles. When I was standing the tentacles went to the floor and were curled up so you could see the underside. To finish the costume, I used theatrical makeup and coloured hairspray. This costume took a lot of work, but ended up being one of my favourites to date.
