A word from Amanda, the 'Where the Wild Things Are' costume creator:
My 3 month old is Max in his wolf suit and her two brothers are Wild Things. My boys like to play monsters and love to read the book, so it seemed only fitting to make them Wild Things this year. I made the Max costume out of $3 fleece, using a pair of pjs as a pattern, added the hood with ears, and made the crown out of stiff gold fabric. The gray wild thing costume is made from a blanket I found at a thrift store for $7. For the other wild thing, I found a white shirt at Walmart for $5 that I painted, and made pj pants out of $5 fleece and drew the scales on with a sharpie with feet flaps. I bought $8 fur, sewed it together, put a little stuffing in it, and sewed it into the back of the pants. I made the lining for the hoods from left over fleece. The eyes are made from stuffed felt and pupils colored with a sharpie. I cut the teeth from white felt. The horns from scrap fabric I sewed together and stuffed, and everything is hot glued everything together. All three costumes have felt claws sewn into the feet flaps. I got a cheap pair of gloves for each boy and hot glued felt claws onto those. I fully realize the gray monster should have bare human feet, but it would have been too cold to go barefoot, and he enjoys being like his brother, so I figured I'd better make them similar.
